Junior Art Club

What is it?
A foundation art club for children aged 4–5, introducing a wide range of materials, techniques and basic art concepts through looking at and discussing inspiring images, hands-on making and simple group reflection. Each lesson can begin with anything from a famous artist or natural phenomenon to an unusual animal, a distant galaxy or an imaginary world.

How the Club Works
The club is made up of a series of self-contained 40-minute lessons that gradually introduce young beginner artists to a wide range of fundamental skills and techniques. We mainly alternate between drawing, painting, collage, modelling, and construction, while also exploring many other creative activities. Because each lesson stands on its own, children are welcome to join at any point during the year. Booking a full term offers a lower price per lesson.

Lesson structure
Each 40-minute lesson begins with around 5 minutes of looking at and discussing inspiring images, followed by 30 minutes of drawing, painting, modelling, construction or another creative activity. We use the final 5 minutes to share our work and reflect on what we made and discovered

Coming Up in Our First Lessons
1. Colours and Names
We will explore the colour wheel, mix 2 of the primary colours and create bright name artworks while taking the steps towards understanding shape, space and background.
2. Growing a Forest
We will look at forests, plants and natural textures, then grow our own little forest using clay, sticks, pasta and other materials.
3. Fantasy Animals
We will talk about favourite animals, unusual real animals and imaginary creatures, then create our own fantasy animals through drawing and collage.
The first lesson themes are planned in advance, but small changes may be made before September if I feel inspired by a different topic, material or technique. The overall focus will stay the same: playful exploration, creative confidence and hands-on art-making.

Practical info
Please wear comfortable clothes and socks that can get messy. We do provide aprons, but they aren't very helpful, as we often work on the floor rather than at a table. Most sessions involve messy art activities, so it's best to come dressed for them.

Why choose us?
This course gives children a strong and playful introduction to art. Instead of copying the teacher, they look at inspiring images, explore different materials and develop their own ideas.
Children practise basic creative skills through drawing, painting, collage, modelling and construction. They learn about colour, shape, line, texture and mark-making while developing fine motor skills, observation, imagination and creative confidence.
We use a wide range of good-quality materials, including paints, pastels, charcoal, markers, different papers and modelling materials. Some activities may be wonderfully messy and difficult to organise at home.
Classes are limited to ten children and supported by a teacher and an assistant, helping us provide a safe environment and give attention to every child.
Each lesson is independent, so children can join at any point during the year without previous experience. A full-term booking offers a lower price per class.
