This course combines art history, creative projects, and role-play.
By bringing different activities together around one theme, it offers a natural, engaging, and joyful way to learn.
Each journey fully immerses children in a historical period, bringing the past to life through imagination and creativity.

This course is a series of time-travelling adventures through the ancient world.

We begin by exploring the ideas of time and invention, looking at ingenious ancient creations alongside some funny modern ones. The children then invent and build a time machine of their own, which we use throughout the year.

Each journey lasts around 5–6 sessions and takes us to a different time and place, including Prehistoric times, Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, and Early Imperial China.

The programme may be gently adjusted depending on the children’s interests and pace.

Once the time machine has been built, each session begins with finding our destination on a map and setting the time period. We then look at images of historical objects and artworks from that time and take part in a short imaginative role-play.

Next, the children create their own artworks inspired by the theme. We finish with a couple of improvisation games and child-led free role-play.

In September, we will explore the concept of time and invention, discover remarkable inventions from the ancient world, and build our own time machine.

Our first journey will take us to the prehistoric world, where we will meet people from the distant past and explore cave paintings, animals and plants, early tools of Stone Age, art materials, and mysterious structures such as Stonehenge and Woodhenge.

We will experiment with cave-painting techniques, sculpt prehistoric animals, build a shared prehistoric scene, and make felt characters inspired by our role-play adventures.

Wear comfortable clothes that can get messy.

Please bring socks or indoor shoes that can get messy, a small snack, and your sketchbook, which will be provided at your first class.

Apples and biscuits are available with parental permission.
